Gold Coin with Awkward Little Bird on it.
 

Hey Guys and Gals,

Someone had posted a little gold coin which pictured a cute, awkward looking little bird on it. IMO. Something like a chicken I think... I have searched the web and GIM and cannot find it anywhere. Perhaps Australian?

Does anyone know the coin I am referring to?

There is a silver Kiwi, I think someone posted a picture here once. I like them but just like AGRO said about the gold coin, there is an "absurd premium."

BTW I have seen fractional gold Kiwi's (1/10) online, but they were sold out and didn't list a price. I shudder to ask!

If you search for the thread titled "Which Bullion Coin is Your Favorite?" eyeofliberty posted a picture of a silver Kiwi. (Sorry, no luck at copying it.)

The mintage numbers make Kooks and Lunars look downright common!

Kiwi are flightless birds endemic to New Zealand, in the genus Apteryx and family Apterygidae.
At around the size of a domestic chicken, kiwi are by far the smallest living ratites and lay the largest egg in relation to its body size.[2] There are five recognised species - all of which are endangered.
The kiwi is a national symbol of New Zealand.

Perhaps the sparseness of this coin is due to the Kiwi being an endangered species..

The NZ Mint is a private, not government, mint. The market is pretty small, too.

The mint changed hands a few years ago, although that didn't change the mintage/premium issue at all.
